Qeshm [Island] (English spelling)

An Iranian island at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. It measures 108 km east to west, 10 to 35 km north to south, and has an area of 1,336 km2. Its population was 29,398 (1966). On the north side, across the Strait of Clarence, is the coastline of mainland Iran connecting Bandar Abbas and Bandar Rengeh. The island has a hot, dry climate and is mostly barren, but with the Strait of Hormuz to the southeast, it has flourished as a transit trade base since the 13th century, and from the 17th to the 19th centuries it was the subject of contestation between Portugal, Britain, Iran, and the Arab world.

ペルシア湾口にあるイラン領の島。東西108km，南北10～35km，面積1336km2。人口2万9398(1966)。クラレンス海峡をはさんで北の対岸はバンダル･アッバースとバンダル･レンゲを結ぶイラン本土の海岸線である。気候は暑く乾燥していて大部分が不毛の土地であるが，南東にホルムズ海峡を控えていて中継貿易の基地として13世紀以降栄え，17～19世紀においてはポルトガル，イギリス，イラン，アラブのあいだで争奪の的になった。
