A mineral whose main product is zinc Zn. The most important source of zinc is sphalerite (Zn,Fe,Mn,Cd)S (Zn content up to 67%), which occurs in various deposits. Well-known deposits include the Kamioka and Nakatatsu contact metasomatic deposits, the Toyoha and Hosokura vein deposits, and the Kosaka and Hanaoka black ore deposits. Wurtzite ZnS is a heteromorph. In addition to sphalerite, the oxide zone of zinc deposits also produces smithsonite ZnCO ₃ (particularly common in deposits with calcite), hemimorphite Zn ₄ (Si ₂ O ₇ )(OH) ₂ ･H ₂ O, and other minerals that are sometimes used as ores.

亜鉛Znをおもな生産金属とする鉱物。亜鉛の原料として重要なのはセン亜鉛鉱(Zn,Fe,Mn,Cd)S(亜鉛含有量最高67％)で，各種の鉱床に産出する。接触交代鉱床の神岡，中竜など，鉱脈鉱床の豊羽，細倉など，黒鉱鉱床の小坂，花岡などの鉱山が著名。ウルツ鉱ZnSは同質異像。亜鉛鉱床の酸化帯にはセン亜鉛鉱のほかに，リョウ亜鉛鉱smithsonite ZnCO₃(とくに方解石を伴う鉱床に多い)，異極鉱Zn₄(Si₂O₇)(OH)₂･H₂Oなどを産し，鉱石として利用されることもある。
