American New Cinema

...This expression was first used in the American weekly magazine Time (December 8, 1967 issue), which featured Arthur Penn's film Bonnie and Clyde (1967), in a sensational headline that read, "New Cinema, Violence, Sex, Art! The Shock of Hollywood's Awakening to Freedom!" This youth film, full of "anarchic violence," depicts the short and intense life of a duo of male and female gangsters who robbed banks in the American Midwest during the depression. Following this youth film, which depicts "lawless youth" and is full of "anarchic violence," Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider (1969), which also depicts "lawless youth," became a huge hit, exciting young audiences.
