The name of an old city located at the southern tip of the Tongyeong Peninsula, which juts out from the center of the southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It was promoted to a city in 1955. In 1995, it was merged with Tongyeong County to become Tongyeong City (area of Tongyeong City: 236.51 square kilometers, population: 123,747, 2,000). The old Chungmu City area has a warm and rainy climate, and is a transportation hub for the islands near the coast, as well as a central fishing port for coastal fishing. There are many oyster and other shellfish farms along the coast. Mother-of-pearl desks, chests of drawers, vases and other folk crafts are a local specialty. It is also developing as a tourist destination, with Hallyeohaesang National Park, Nammangsan Park, the Sebyeonggwan built in the early 17th century, the undersea tunnel (461 meters), and Jeseungdang.
