A general term for the canals around Birmingham in the West Midlands, central England, United Kingdom, which occupy a central position in the inland waterway network of the United Kingdom. It has a total length of about 166 km, a total of 139 locks, and a minimum width of 2.1 m. In addition to the main canal, the Main Line Canal, the Birmingham, Phaseley Canal, the Warley, Essington Canal, and others were excavated one after another from 1768. These canal networks were further connected to the River Severn via the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, the River Thames via the Grand Union Canal, and the River Trent and the River Mersey via the Trent and Mersey Canal, linking the North Sea with the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.
