Sociologist. Born in Hyogo Prefecture on March 6, 1887. After graduating from the Department of Philosophy (specializing in sociology) of the College of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1912 (Meiji 45), he worked as a teacher at Toyama Prefectural College of Pharmacy, an assistant at Tokyo Imperial University, and a member of the Ohara Institute of Social Research before studying abroad in Europe and the United States. After returning to Japan in 1922 (Taisho 11), he became an associate professor at Tokyo Imperial University, and then a professor in 1929 (Showa 4) in charge of sociology. Shortly after arriving at Tokyo University, he founded the Japanese Sociological Association as a national academic society to replace the former Japan Sociological Academy, and played a major role in the new development of sociology in Japan as its executive director and president. Influenced by the empirical sociology of the Chicago School of American studies, he conducted extensive research on Japanese families, the results of which are presented in the trilogy "Study of the Family" (1926), "Family and Marriage" (1934), and "Family Structure" (1937). Among his works, "Family Structure," which analyzed the kinship structure of Japanese families based on the sample sheets from the first population census (1920), is particularly highly regarded. His other works include "An Introduction to Sociology" (1952). He passed away on July 31, 1955.
