...A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family commonly found in the mountains and fields (illustration). Children eat the ripe red fruits. The branches are flexible, yet strong and resistant to breaking, so they are used to make handles for tools. They are also twisted to bundle firewood and are used to make snowshoes. In some regions, they are used as walking sticks as they are believed to ward off evil. The origin of the Japanese name is not well known, but it is thought that "zumi" means sour fruit. It grows 2-4m tall and branches well. The leaves are opposite and broadly ovate to circular, with many stellate hairs, simple hairs, and glandular dots on the underside. ...
