…A Sudanese agricultural people who live in the southwest of the Republic of Sudan, the eastern Central African Republic, and the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are also called the Zande. Their population is estimated at over 750,000, but their ethnicity is complex, with Sudanese tribes mixed with Nilotic and Bantu tribes. Historically, they were divided into small independent kingdoms, but at the end of the 17th century, a powerful clan called Abongala conquered the others and unified the Azande. The Azande live in a gently sloping hilly area where small rivers upstream of the Nile and Congo Rivers intersect, and they make a living by slash-and-burn agriculture, fishing, and hunting. …
