Awano Shunkei Lacquerware

Japanese: 粟野春慶塗 - あわのしゅんけいぬり

A regional brand of Ibaraki Prefecture in the Kanto region.
It is produced in Shirosato Town, Higashiibaraki County. It is one of the three great Shunkei lacquer crafts in Japan. It is said to have been started in 1489 (the first year of the Entoku era) by Minamoto Yoshiaki, lord of Inagawayama Castle, in what is now the Katsura area of Shirosato Town. During the Edo period, Tokugawa Mitsukuni also encouraged it, and it is also known as Mito Shunkei. Shunkei lacquering is a lacquering technique in which a vessel is coated with a transparent lacquer to allow the wood grain to show through. The entire process is carried out from refining the lacquer to creating the wooden base by joining, lacquering, and drying to finishing. Currently, the main products are everyday items such as stacked boxes, trays, lunch boxes, and inkstone boxes. It is a local craft of Ibaraki Prefecture.

東茨城郡城里町で製作されている。日本三春慶の一つにかぞえられる漆工芸。1489(延徳元)年に、稲川山城主・源義明が、現在の城里町桂地区で始めたと伝えられている。江戸時代には徳川光圀も奨励し、水戸春慶の別名がある。春慶塗とは漆塗りの技法の一つで、器に透明な漆を塗って木目が透けて見えるように仕上げたものをいう。漆の精製から指し物による木地づくり・漆塗り・乾燥仕上げまでの工程が一貫しておこなわれる。現在は、重箱・盆・弁当箱・硯箱などの日常生活用品などが主製品。茨城県郷土工芸品。
