Kaolin

A fireclay composed of kaolin minerals (kaolinite, halloysite, dickite, hydrated halloysite, nacrite) that is white or nearly white when fired. Its main component is aluminum silicate. Impurities are mainly feldspar, silica sand, and mica minerals. Depending on the impurities, it is called feldspathic kaolin, micaceous kaolin, and one with a high iron content is called ferruginous kaolin. Clay with kaolinite as its main component is used for ceramics, refractories, and sheaths, while clay with halloysite as its main component is used for producing alumina and aluminum sulfate.

カオリン鉱物(カオリナイト，ハロイサイト，ディッカイト，加水ハロイサイト，ナクライト)よりなる耐火粘土で，焼成色が白色あるいは白に近いもの．主成分はケイ酸アルミニウム．不純物はおもに長石，けい砂，および雲母鉱物．不純物により長石質カオリン，雲母質カオリン，鉄の多いものを含鉄カオリンという．カオリナイトを主成分とする粘土は，陶磁器用，耐火物，さや用として用いられ，ハロイサイトを主成分とするものは，アルミナ製造用，硫酸アルミニウム製造用に利用される．
