The capital of the Lot department in southwestern France. It is located in the southwest of the Massif Central, overlooking a beautiful gorge with deep meanders of the Lot River. It was founded in Gallo-Roman times, and was known as a fortress and commercial center in the Middle Ages. The Pont de Ballentré (14th century), a fortified bridge that spans the gorge, is famous. The city also has the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne (12th-15th century), the remains of the Roman baths, the tower of Pope John XXII, and an unfinished palace, so it retains a medieval appearance. It is the administrative and commercial center of the region, and has light industries (locks, shoes, canned goods, musical instruments, etc.), but tourism is particularly important. Population 20,787 (1990). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
