Ikkyu - Ikkyu

Japanese: 一休 - いっきゅう
Ikkyu - Ikkyu
Born: January 1, 1394, Kyoto
[Died] November 21, 1481. A Rinzai sect monk and poet from the early Muromachi period in Yamashiro. His childhood name was Shuken, and his given name was Sojun. His pen names included Kyounshi, Yumei, and Tenkaro Osho. He is said to be the illegitimate son of Emperor Gokomatsu. He entered Ankoku-ji Temple at the age of six, learned how to compose poetry at the age of thirteen, and made a name for himself as a poet by the age of fifteen. He studied calligraphy from Seisōnin, both domestic and foreign, and entered Saikane-ji Temple at the age of seventeen to study under Ken'ō Soei. After his death, he followed Kasō Soton in Katada, Omi. He became the chief priest of Daitoku-ji Temple in 1474, but retired soon after, living in Shuon-an in Takigi, Yamashiro, and other places. He resented the decadence of Zen Buddhism in general, and often behaved eccentrically, but he had a witty personality and was revered by both the court and the public. His calligraphy was unique even among the Zen temples of the Muromachi period, and the "Geshon" he gave to his disciple Shosho is still extant. He wrote "Jikaishu" (55), "Kyouunshu" (before 81), and "Zoku Kyounshu".
