Takayama [Village] - Takayama

Japanese: 高山[村] - たかやま
Takayama [Village] - Takayama
A village in Agatsuma County in northern Gunma Prefecture. Population 4,088 (1995). It lies north of Mt. Komochi and Mt. Onoko, and the Nakuda River, a tributary of the Agatsuma River, flows west through the center of the town. The main settlement, Nakayama, was a post town on the Mikuni Kaido road during the Edo period. It was the center of tobacco leaf cultivation in the prefecture, but production has declined since 1950. Livestock such as chickens are raised, and konjac and shiitake mushrooms are cultivated. The village-run Komochi Ranch is located at the northeastern foot of Mt. Onoko, and tourism development is underway in the surrounding area. National Route 145 runs through the town, connecting Numata City and Nakanojo Town.

Takayama [village]

A village in Kamitakai District, northeastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 7,773 (1995). A mountain village surrounded by mountains on three sides, Matsukawa River, a tributary of the Chikuma River, flows west through the center, dividing the village into Yamada and Takai districts. The main industries are agriculture, mainly rice, apples, grapes, and hops, but 85% of the village area is forest and wilderness, and there is little arable land. Located near Nagano City, farmland has recently been rapidly converted into housing and other side-businesses, and the village is becoming more of a commuter town. The eastern part of the village is part of Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park, and Yamada Ranch is located at the southwest foot of Mt. Kasagatake, and hot springs such as Yamada, Goshiki, and Shichimi are located upstream of Matsukawa River.
