Kautilya - Kautilya (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Indian politician. As the prime minister of Chandragupta (reigned 316-293 BCE), the founder of the Maurya dynasty, which was the first to unify India, he is said to have been a skilled leader in ruling the empire. His ideas are conveyed in Kauiliya-Artha śāstra . The contents of this book are about politics, diplomacy, and military affairs, but it was compiled by a Brahmin scholar around the 3rd century AD, and not all of it represents his ideas. The core of his political ideas was the construction of an autocratic state through military rule, and as a means to achieve this, he emphasized a strong military organization, bureaucratic control that mobilizes detectives and informants, and utilitarianism that puts everything in the service of politics.

生没年不詳。古代インドの政治家。インドを初めて統一したマウリヤ王朝の創始者チャンドラグプタ（在位前316～前293ころ）の宰相として、帝国支配のために敏腕を振るったとされる。彼の思想は『カウティリヤ実利論』Kauilīya-Artha śāstraのなかに伝えられている。この書の内容は、政治、外交、軍事に関するものであるが、紀元後3世紀ごろにバラモン学者によって編集されたもので、そのすべてが彼の思想を示すものではない。その政治思想の中心は、武断政治による専制国家の建設であって、そのための手段として強力な軍隊組織、探偵、密告を動員する官僚支配、いっさいを政治に奉仕させる功利主義を強調した。
