Buddha statue line

Japanese: 仏像線 - ぶつぞうせん

A large north-dipping reverse fault that forms the boundary between the Chichibu Belt and the Shimanto Belt in the Outer Zone of Southwest Japan, also known as the Butsuzo Tectonic Line or the Butsuzo-Itokawa Tectonic Line, extends from the Nansei Islands through Kyushu, Shikoku, the Kii Peninsula and the Chubu region to the Kanto region. It was named by Kobayashi Teiichi after a small village on the western edge of Tosa City, Kochi Prefecture. To the north of the Butsuzo Line, geosynclinal deposits from the late Paleozoic to middle Mesozoic eras have developed, and strata from the late Mesozoic era onwards are shallow marine to non-marine, while in the Shimanto Belt to the south, geosynclinal deposits from the late Mesozoic to middle Tertiary eras are distributed, making this tectonic line important in geological history.

西南日本外帯の秩父帯と四万十帯の境界をなす大規模な北傾斜の逆断層で，仏像構造線，仏像‐糸川構造線ともいわれており，南西諸島から九州，四国，紀伊半島および中部地方を経て関東地方まで延びる。これの名称は高知県土佐市の西端にある小集落名にちなんで小林貞一が命名した。仏像線の北側には，古生代後期～中生代中期の地向斜堆積物が発達し，中生代後期以降の地層が浅海～非海成のものであるのに対し，南側の四万十帯には中生代後期から第三紀中ごろにわたる時代の地向斜堆積物が分布しており，この構造線は地史的に重要な意味をもつ。
