The name comes from the English nun Walburga (?-780), who accompanied Boniface on his mission to Germany. The veneration of Saint Walburga, who served as the abbess of Heidenheim and whose tomb oozed miraculous healing properties even after her death, is thought to have arisen from the syncretism of the worship of the Mother Goddess that existed before the spread of Christianity, and the fact that one of her feast days is May 1st. ...
