A mountain that rises to the northeast of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, western Tochigi Prefecture. It is also called Mt. Kurokami, and was also shown as Mt. Futarasan on early 1:50,000 topographical maps. At 2,486 meters above sea level, it is the second highest of the Nikko volcanoes, second only to Mt. Shirane, among which are Mt. Nyoho and Mt. Akanagi. It is a stratovolcano made of pyroxene andesite and dacite, and as a whole the original form of the volcano has been well preserved, presenting a beautiful mountain shape, forming the core of Nikko National Park. At the summit there is a crater about 800 meters in diameter, from which crater rapids open out to the north. Erosion valleys such as Onagi, Kannonnagi, and Furunagi radiate out from the mountainside, and the erosion steps are still in their infancy. In recent years, erosion control dams have been built like the teeth of a comb on the mountainside, giving it a rather painful appearance. Lake Chuzenji was formed when lava from Mt. Nantai dammed the Daiya River, and a hiking trail leads straight from Futarasan Shrine on the lakeside to the summit. On the opening day of the mountain on August 1st, climbers who had gathered the day before all begin their late-night climb, and a week-long festival is held until August 7th. In 782 (Enryaku 1), Shodo Shonin opened up the mountain, and the Shugendo Zencho-ro (a path for ascetic training) continued through Shizu on the northern foot of the mountain to Mt. Omanago. Surveys of the mountaintop ruins in 1924 (Taisho 13) and other times unearthed mirrors, esoteric Buddhist ritual implements, old coins and other ritual relics from the Nara to Edo periods, which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties by the nation. The view from the summit is magnificent. [Mitsue Hirayama] Together with Lake Chuzenji (in the foreground of the photo), this mountain forms the core of Nikko National Park. It has been revered as a sacred place of mountain worship since ancient times. The inner shrine of Futarasan Shrine is located on the summit.
