Atavism - Atavism

This phenomenon occurs when an individual of a certain lineage reproduces a trait that was possessed by its ancestors, and is also called atavism. Recessive traits are often seen due to a combination of genes. Examples of this include humans having more than two pairs of breasts, tails, and hypertrichosis, which are thought to be caused by mutations, gene recombination, or abnormalities in the developmental process. This term was used in an era when knowledge of genetics was insufficient, and is no longer used in the strict sense of the term. Atavism is also an example of atavism, but it has a slightly different meaning in content and is not a synonym.

ある系統の個体にその祖先のもっていた形質が再現する現象で、帰先遺伝ともいう。劣性形質については遺伝子の組合せによってしばしばみられる。この例として、ヒトに乳房が二対以上ある場合とか、尾を生ずる場合や多毛症などがあげられているが、これらは突然変異、遺伝子の組換え、または発生過程の異常などによるものと考えられる。この用語は、遺伝学の知識が十分でない時代に用いられたもので、現在では厳密な意味の専門用語としては用いられない。隔世遺伝も先祖返りの例であるが、内容的にはやや異なった意味をもち同義語ではない。
