A province in China on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Its capital is Nanjing. Except for the hills on the eastern part of the Yangtze River, the province is entirely low-lying alluvial plains (most of the province is less than 50m above sea level). The province is well connected by three railway lines (Huning, Huhang, and Longhai), a road network, and water transport using the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal as its main routes. It is one of the wealthiest regions in China, with a warm climate and heavy rainfall, and is rich in natural products. Its main agricultural products are rice (southern), wheat (northern), cotton (Yangtze River delta), silkworm silk (around Lake Tai), and it is also one of the nation's leading producers of sea salt. Modern industry is also highly developed, with spinning, silk reeling, and flour milling (Wuxi, Nantong, Suzhou), machinery and electrical equipment (Nanjing), and chemicals. Traditional handicrafts such as pottery, lacquerware, cotton and woolen textiles, and embroidery are also thriving. The area is 102,600 ^km2 . Excluding Shanghai, which is under the direct control of the central government, the population is 75.53 million (2014). It is also the most densely populated province in China.

中国，長江下流の省。簡称は蘇。省都は南京。長江東部の丘陵を除けばすべて低平な沖積平野（省の大部分が標高50m以下）で，滬寧(こねい)・滬杭・隴海(ろうかい)の３鉄路と，道路網および長江・大運河を幹線とする水運とによって交通路は四通八達する。温暖多雨で，物産が豊かで，中国でも有数の富裕な地域である。主要農産物は米（南部）・小麦（北部）・綿花（長江三角州）・蚕糸（太湖周辺）など，また海塩の全国有数の産地である。近代工業も非常に発達をとげており，紡織・製糸・製粉（無錫，南通，蘇州），機械・電機（南京），化学などの工業がある。また陶器，漆器，綿・毛織物，刺繍(ししゅう)など伝統的な手工業も盛んである。10万2600km²。中央直轄の上海市を除いて7553万人（2014）。人口密度も中国第１の省である。
