German Old Testament scholar. He served as a private lecturer at the University of Leipzig, an assistant professor of Old Testament studies there, and a professor of Old Testament studies at the universities of Basel, Tübingen, and Halle. He basically took the position of Wellhausen. He published a translation of the Old Testament and a revised version of Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar. The latter in particular is still regarded as a standard grammar book today. He was also one of the founders of the German Society for the Study of Palestine. His main works are "Grammatik des Bibl.-Aramäischen" (1884), "Die Apokryphen und Pseudepigraphen des AT" (2 volumes, 1900), "Die Aramäismen im AT" (02), and "Biblische Theologie des AT(postum)" (11).
