The cathedral (official name San Martino), built between the 11th and 13th centuries, is a famous pilgrimage site due to its Volto Santo, a crucifix that is said to have been completed by the disciple Nicodemus with the help of an angel. The style of this crucifix has also influenced areas north of the Alps. In addition to the Pisan Romanesque façade, with its white marble walls lined with black marble horizontal stripes and a three-tiered arcade above the entrance, the church was decorated with animal and geometric sculptures and colored marble inlays above the columns and arches, just like the Church of San Michele (12th century), creating a style unique to Lucca.
