Huang-Lao (English spelling)

Japanese: 黄老 - こうろう（英語表記）Huang-Lao

This refers to Chinese Taoist thought, especially that which was popular in the early Western Han period. The literal meaning is Yellow Emperor and Laozi, and it is said to be another name for Laozi's teachings, but it is unclear. However, the expression "the art of Huang Lao" is often seen, which suggests that it was linked to a special technique for putting Taoist thought into practice. The early Han period was the aftermath of a long period of war, and people's desire for personal peace led to the popularity of secularized Taoist thought. The Huainanzi can be seen as a summary of that thought. After the Six Dynasties, the term Huang Lao was no longer used, and the Xuanxue school of Laozi and Zhuangzi emerged.

中国の道家思想，特に前漢初期に流行したそれをいう。字義は黄帝と老子とをさし，老子の教えの別称というが明確でない。ただし，しばしば「黄老の術」という表現がみられるので，道家思想を実践する特殊な技術と結びついていたらしいことがわかる。漢代初期は長い戦乱のあとだったので，個人の平安を願う人々の心理が世俗化した道家思想を流行させた。『淮南子 (えなんじ) 』をその思想の総決算とみることができる。六朝以後は黄老の称は行われず，「老荘」の玄学が興った。
