A city at the southern tip of Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It faces Shibushi Bay to the south and is mostly mountainous. The city center was originally written as Kushima, and after Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified Kyushu, it was once a castle town of the Akizuki clan. The Nichinan Line runs through the city. Double rice cropping, forced vegetable cultivation, and fruit cultivation are thriving, and livestock farming is also carried out. Coastal fishing and yellowtail farming are also thriving.
