Mount Kasagatake

Japanese: 笠ヶ岳 - かさがたけ

This mountain is located in the Okuhida Onsen area, northeast of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. It lies to the west of the mountains of Yari-ga-take and Hotaka-dake, and has an elevation of 2,898 meters. It is characterized by its shape of a neat cap from any angle, and is made of quartz trachyte. It is said that the monk Dosen Osho and the monk Enku Shonin climbed it in the past, and during the Bunsei era (1818-1830), the monk Banryu climbed it five times. In the Meiji era, the first person to climb it was the British missionary W. Weston, in 1894 (Meiji 27). It takes about nine hours to reach the peak from Shinhotaka Onsen. Kasagatake Sanso is located on the north side of the peak.

岐阜県高山市の北東部、奥飛騨(ひだ)温泉郷地区にある山。槍ヶ岳(やりがたけ)、穂高岳の山々の西方にあたり、標高2898メートル。どこからでも端正な笠の形にみえるのが特色で、石英粗面岩からできている。古くは道泉和尚(おしょう)や円空上人(えんくうしょうにん)が登ったといわれ、文政(ぶんせい)年間（1818～1830）には播隆(ばんりゅう)上人が5回も登った。明治になって初めて登ったのはイギリス人宣教師W・ウェストンで、1894年（明治27）のこと。山頂へは新穂高温泉から約9時間。山頂の北側に笠ヶ岳山荘がある。
