Acropora studeri (green stone)

Acropora studeri (green stone)
A coelenterate (cnidaria) of the family Acropora (anthozoa) (illustration). This is a typical species that forms reef-building corals, and is widely distributed from the warm currents of Japan to the southern seas. The short branches fuse together and spread out in a plane, forming a flat colony 1 to 2 meters in diameter. The upper surface is densely covered with short branches pointing upward, but the underside is flat and has no protrusions. The calcareous skeleton is porous and not hard. The polyps are green or brown in color because countless tiny zooxanthellae (zooxanthellae) live symbiotically with them.
