Kamiya Denbei

Japanese: 神谷伝兵衛 - かみやでんべえ

1856-1922 A businessman from the Meiji and Taisho periods.
Born February 11, 1856. He learned wine-making methods in the foreign settlement in Yokohama, and added sweeteners to imported alcohol, selling it under the bee brand. In 1901, together with his adopted son Denzo, who had mastered wine-making methods in France, he cultivated grapes in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, and in 1903, built the winery Ushiku Chateau. He passed away on April 24, 1922. He was 67 years old. He was born in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture).

安政3年2月11日生まれ。横浜の外国人居留地でワイン製造法をまなび,輸入酒に甘味料などをくわえ蜂印の商標で販売。明治34年フランスでワイン醸造法をおさめた養子伝蔵とともに茨城県牛久でブドウを栽培し,36年ワイン醸造所牛久シャトーを建設した。大正11年4月24日死去。67歳。三河(愛知県)出身。
