Battle of Minatogawa

Japanese: 湊川の戦 - みなとがわのたたかい

In 1336, near the Minatogawa River in Hyōgo, Settsu Province (present-day Kobe City), the forces of Ashikaga Takauji and Ashikaga Tadayoshi, who had marched east from Kyushu, fought a battle with the forces of Nitta Yoshisada and Kusunoki Masashige. Takauji's army, which had assembled a large force, was victorious, and Yoshisada fled to Kyoto, while Masashige committed suicide along with his family and subordinates. This led to the collapse of the Kenmu New Government, and Takauji, who had entered Kyoto, supported Emperor Kōmyō and established the Muromachi shogunate.

1336年，摂津国兵庫（現神戸市）の湊川付近で，九州から東上した足利尊氏・足利直義(ただよし)軍と，新田義貞・楠木正成軍との合戦。大軍を結集した尊氏軍の勝利に帰し，義貞は京都に敗走，正成は一族・配下とともに自刃。これにより建武新政府は崩壊，入京した尊氏は光明(こうみょう)天皇を擁立し，室町幕府を樹立する。
