Johann Jakob Froberger

German composer, organist, and keyboard player. He was baptized on May 19th. As the son of Basil Froberger (1575-1637), the court conductor of Stuttgart, he received a good musical education, and then went to Vienna around 1634. He became the court organist in 1637, but studied in Rome and was taught by Frescobaldi until around 1640/1641. He served as the court organist in Vienna from 1641 to 1645 and from 1653 to 1657, but after traveling to Paris, London, Brussels, and various parts of Germany, he died on May 6th/7th, 1667 in Hericourt near Basel (now part of France), as a "sincere and enthusiastic teacher" to Sibylla, Duchess of Montpérial of Württemberg. His keyboard works, which include toccatas, ricercares, fantasias, canzonas, Capriccios, and suites, are a mixture of Italian and French styles rooted in his experiences traveling throughout Europe, and they determined the direction of German keyboard music that would lead to Bach.

ドイツの作曲家、オルガン奏者、鍵盤(けんばん)楽器奏者。洗礼日は5月19日。シュトゥットガルトの宮廷楽長バジリウス・フローベルガー（1575―1637）の息子として恵まれた音楽教育を受けたのち、1634年ごろウィーンに出、37年には宮廷オルガン奏者となるが、ローマに留学し、40／41年ごろまでフレスコバルディの薫陶を受ける。41～45年、53～57年ウィーンの宮廷オルガン奏者を務めるが、パリ、ロンドン、ブリュッセル、ドイツ各地を旅行したのち、ウュルテンベルク・モンペリアル公女ジビッラの「誠実で熱心な教師」として、67年5月6／7日、バーゼル近郊エリクール（現在はフランス領）で世を去っている。トッカータ、リチェルカーレ、ファンタジア、カンツォーナ、カプリッチオ、組曲などからなる彼の鍵盤曲は、ヨーロッパ各地に旅した経験に根ざしたイタリア様式とフランス様式の混合によって、バッハに至るドイツ鍵盤音楽の方向を決定した。
