Between 1658 and 1685, he built walls around Berlin, Cologne, and Friedrichswerder, which became a city in 1667, turning them into fortifications. He also built the city of Dorotheen, which was surrounded by the Unter den Linden street (laid out in 1647) outside the moat, and began construction of the city of Friedrich, which later became the center of Berlin.
