Egyptian female singer. She learned traditional Koranic recitation from her father, and was recognized for her singing at festivals and other occasions, so she went to Cairo in 1922. Since then, she has rivaled Asmahan in popularity and talent, and after Asmahan's death, she became the leading Arab singer in Egypt in both name and reality. She passed on the traditional singing techniques inherited from Sayyid Darwish, and her regular concerts on the first Thursday of every month were broadcast live throughout the Arab world. Even today, Umm Kulthum Radio broadcasts only her songs every night.

エジプトの女性歌手。父から伝統的コーラン読誦法を習い，祭礼の折などに歌っているのを認められ，1922年カイロに出る。それ以後アスマハーンと人気と実力を二分するほどになり，アスマハーンの死後，名実ともにエジプトにおけるアラブの歌手の第一人者となる。サイイド･ダルウィーシュが遺した伝統的歌唱法を伝え，毎月第1木曜の定期公演は，全アラブ地域に実況中継された。今日でもウンム･クルスーム放送が毎夜彼女の歌だけを流している。
