1908‐75 Egyptian female singer. She learned traditional Koranic recitation from her father, and was recognized for her singing at festivals and other occasions, so she went to Cairo in 1922. Since then, she has rivaled Asmahan in popularity and talent, and after Asmahan's death, she became the leading Arab singer in Egypt in both name and reality. She passed on the traditional singing techniques inherited from Sayyid Darwish, and her regular concerts on the first Thursday of every month were broadcast live throughout the Arab world. Even today, Umm Kulthum Radio broadcasts only her songs every night. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
