A general term for insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae. Approximately 70 species are known. Wing span is 4.5-10cm. The larvae feed on plants of the Passifloraceae family, and contain the poisonous substances in their bodies, which helps them to avoid predation by birds and other predators. Many species have bright colors that combine several colors such as red, yellow, blue, and black, and have long, thin wings. They are found only in the New World, and many species are found in the tropical regions of South America, and some reach North America.
