…The eight-segmented thorax and the location of the genital pores are characteristic of the Malacostraca, but the Stomatopoda are an isolated group with few characteristics that indicate a deep affinities with other classes. Most of them, such as the mantis shrimp Oratosquilla oratoria (illustration), commonly found in Japan, live in holes dug in the sandy mud bottom of shallow waters, but some, such as the giant clam Gonodactyla , live on coral reefs, and a few species are known from the deep sea. While the adult population has a very narrow range of movement, the planktonic larvae of this group appear in unexpected, distant oceans. …
