…As part of the International Earth's Interior Project (UMP) in the 1950s, the Mohole Project was taken up, which attempted to penetrate the Mohorovičić discontinuity (commonly known as the Moho) to reach the mantle, and preliminary experiments were conducted, but it was discontinued without success. Learning from the failure of the Mohole Project, the DSDP abandoned the intention of penetrating the Moho, but instead attempted to study deep-sea sediments and the upper crust by drilling shallower. It was initially jointly planned by several oceanographic institutes in the United States, and was launched in 1968 under the name of JOIDES (Joint Oceanographic Institutions Deep Earth Sampling Program). The Glomar Challenger (11,000 tons) has been used as the drilling ship. …
