Yue-ju (English: Yue opera)

Japanese: 越劇 - えつげき（英語表記）Yue-ju

A type of regional Chinese drama. It is also called Shaoxing Opera after its birthplace. Around 1920, regional dramas arose in Shaoxing and Shandong in Zhejiang Province. The style of production and scriptwriting is similar to Peking Opera, but the intonation and accent are slightly different. The content is more popular and entertaining than Peking Opera. At first, many themes were taken from local folk performing arts, but as they toured cities such as Shanghai, they became more popular, and love stories between men and women became the focus of their repertoire. They formed troupes of actresses only. There are Yue Opera troupes in various places. Actresses include Yuan Xuefen, Fan Ruijuan, Qi Yaxian, and Xu Yulan, and representative plays include "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" and "The Legend of the Xixiang."

中国の地方劇の一つ。発祥地にちなんで紹興劇 (しょうこうげき) ともいう。 1920年頃，浙江省の紹興や山東地方に起った地方劇演出や脚本の様式は，京劇と同系で，節回しと言葉のなまりが少し違う。内容は京劇に比べて通俗的で娯楽性が強い。初め地方の民俗芸能から多くの題材を求めたが，上海などの都市を巡演するうちに通俗的な傾向を強め，男女の情愛物が演目の中心となり，女優だけの劇団を構成した。各地に越劇団がある。女優に袁雪分，范瑞娟，戚雅仙，徐玉蘭らがおり，代表的演目に『梁山伯と祝英台』『西廂記』などがある。
