Around 1480 - 1521
A Portuguese navigator. He worked at the Portuguese trading post in the port city of Canaan in southwestern India for 16 years from 1500, and participated in voyages to various parts of the Orient. His geographical work, Book of Duarte Barbosa (1518), which he wrote based on what he saw during that time, contains detailed records of the manners, customs, climate, geography, and products of various places from the east coast of Africa to India, the Spice Islands (the Maluku Islands), the Ryukyu Islands, and China. His book, along with the travelogue of the Italian Ludovico de Varthema, is an important record of the interest and knowledge of the Orient among Europeans at that time.

ポルトガルの航海家。1500年から16年間インド南西部の港市カナノールのポルトガル商館に勤務し，東洋諸地域への航海に参加。その間の見聞に基づいて著した地理書《ドゥアルテ･バルボサの書》(1518)には，アフリカ東海岸からインド，香料諸島(モルッカ諸島)，琉球，中国に至る各地の風俗，慣習，気候，地理，産物などが詳細に記録されている。その著書は当時のヨーロッパ人の東洋への関心や知識を知るうえで，イタリア人のバルテーマLudovico de Varthemaの旅行記とともに重要な記録である。
