A Christian educational institution in Alexandria in the 2nd to 4th centuries. At first it was a simple catechesis for those hoping to be baptized, but because Alexandria was generally a place of learning, and Christians also had a strong tendency to study catechesis academically, it is thought that the institution eventually took on the substance of a college, with the goal of imparting Christianity academically as a means of completing culture, rather than providing practical instruction in religious life. Geometry, physiology, astronomy, philosophy (especially Plato and Aristotle), and ethics were taught before the study of theology, and it became the base of the Alexandrian school. Clement and Origen were representative figures, and the issue of integrating Greek philosophy and Christianity was also addressed at this school early on. However, this later development as a college is sometimes distinguished from the earlier catechesis, and only the latter is considered to be the Alexandrian School.
