A former town in Iki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. It occupies the eastern half of Iki Island, with the main settlements on the east coast. Coastal fishing and rice cultivation using groundwater are practiced, and the town also produces tobacco leaves and beef cattle. Scenic spots such as Akase-hana and Chojaharazaki belong to the Iki-Tsushima Quasi-National Park. In March 2004, it merged with the towns of Gonoura, Katsumoto, and Ishida in Iki District to form Iki City. 45.12 km2 . Population 9,250 (2003). 長崎県壱岐(いき)郡の旧町。壱岐島東半部を占め,東岸に主集落が発達。沿岸漁業や地下水利用による稲作を行い,葉タバコ,肉牛も産する。赤瀬鼻,長者原崎など景勝地は壱岐対馬国定公園に属する。2004年3月壱岐郡郷ノ浦町,勝本町,石田町と合併し,壱岐市となる。45.12km2。9250人(2003)。
