Polarized light can be decomposed into two linearly polarized components that vibrate at right angles to each other, and depending on their amplitude and phase difference, they can be classified as linearly polarized, circularly polarized, or elliptically polarized. As mentioned above, light whose vibration plane (or vibration vector) is limited to one plane relative to the direction of light propagation is called linearly polarized light, or plane polarized light, and linearly polarized light can be decomposed into two linearly polarized light components with a phase difference of mπ ( m = 0, ±1, ±2, ...) that vibrate at right angles to each other in a plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation (Figure).
