When very strong light hits a photographic plate or film, the light that passes through the photosensitive layer is reflected back by the back side of the film base, resulting in fogging. This often occurs when taking a photograph against strong backlight or a bright light source. To prevent this, methods are used to coat the film base with a dye (antihalation layer) or to lightly color the film base itself (gray base) to weaken the reflected light.
