[Raw] Taishi 2 (266) [Death] Taining 2 (324) A military commander in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (→Jin), China. A native of Langya (Shandong Province). His courtesy name was Chuzhong. Cousin of Wang Dao. Famous as a military commander, he assisted Emperor Yuan (→Sima Rui) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty when he was working to manage the Jiangdong region before he ascended to the throne. He was a local governor and military commander (Jiangzhou governor) with vast territories under his control, and his influence was even greater than that of Emperor Yuan. As a result, he came into conflict with Emperor Yuan and his aides, and eventually raised an army (322) under the pretext of executing Emperor Yuan's aides, which was initially successful. However, he died during the reign of Emperor Ming without achieving his ambition of becoming emperor himself.
