British Crown Colony of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a special administrative region in the southeastern part of mainland China, located on the east side of the Pearl River estuary in Guangdong Province, adjacent to the Shenzhen special economic zone. It was a British direct colony (officially called the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong), but was returned to China on July 1, 1997. It was formerly part of the Sinan County, and consists of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula across the strait, and other islands.
