The Egyptian nationalist movement was led by Colonel Ahmad al-Arabi and centered on the Watan (Fatherland) Party, which was founded in 1879. It was also called the Arabi movement. Its direct objective was to criticize and resist the international control of Egyptian finances after 1876 and the rapid strengthening of European rule (the establishment of the so-called "European Cabinet").
