…In the past, many mechanical solar orbs were made, but today, a planetarium is a device that projects celestial bodies inside a round ceiling in the same way as the actual starry sky. The first planetariums were made in the early 1910s, when O. von Miller, director of the Deutsches Museum in Munich, Germany, wanted to make a device that would show the principles of celestial motion, and after consulting with M. Wolf, then director of the Heidelberg Observatory, commissioned Carl Zeiss Optical Company to make it. W. Bauersfeld and others at the company completed the development, and in the summer of 1923, it was temporarily unveiled in a 16m diameter dome on the roof of the Zeiss building, where it was met with great acclaim. At the time, the machine could only display the starry sky as seen in Jena or Munich, but it was soon improved to display the starry sky at any latitude around the world, and various other improvements were made. …

…古くは機械的な太陽系運動儀のようなものもかなり数多く作られたが，現在では丸天井の内側に実際の星空と同様な諸天体を映し出す装置をもっぱらプラネタリウムと呼んでいる。これは1910年代の初めころ，ドイツのミュンヘンのドイツ博物館のミラーO.von Miller館長が，天体運行の原理を示す装置を作りたいと当時のハイデルベルク天文台長M.ウォルフと相談した結果，カール･ツァイス光学会社にその製作を依頼し，同社のバウエルスフェルトW.Bauersfeldらが開発完成したのがその初めであって，23年夏ツァイス社屋上の直径16mのドーム内で仮公開されて大好評を博した。当時の機械はイェーナ，あるいはミュンヘンで見られる星空を現すだけであったが，その後まもなく改良されて世界中のどの緯度の土地の星空も現すようになり，さらに各種の改良が加えられていった。…
