Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko

A Russian novelist. The son of a Ukrainian official, his mother was Polish. He was a writer who belonged to the late Narodnik ideology, and despite his experiences of poverty, imprisonment, and wandering, he maintained an optimistic outlook on life and never lost hope for a bright future. Many of his works were based on his experiences in Siberian exiles, and he became known in the literary world for "Makar's Dream" (1885). In this work, the poor peasant Makar is judged in heaven in a dream, and the Lord recognizes poverty and overwork as the reasons for his failure to do good deeds. "The Blind Musician" (1886) also depicts the process of a blind boy growing into an excellent pianist, and both are permeated with the author's optimism of carving out a future with an indomitable spirit no matter what adversity he faces. However, Korolenko's optimism did not mean to ignore the negative aspects of the lower classes that appear in his works. In terms of literary history, he is considered to be somewhere between Chekhov and Gorky, and his other works include "Bad Comrades" (1885), "The Forest Rusts" (1886), and "The Escaped Convict from Hawk's Island" (1885).
