River Festival

Japanese: 川祭 - かわまつり

〘Noun〙 A water god festival held in the sixth and twelfth lunar months. Many festivals in June are held on the 1st, 15th or on the last day of the month, and some are connected to shrine festivals in Gion, Tenno or Tsushima. The 1st is the normal date in December, and offerings of rice cakes dipped in the river are thrown into the river. *Questions and Answers on the Customs of Various Provinces (before the 19th century) from Questions and Answers on the Customs of Amakusa County, Higo Province: "During the seven days of Hikan, a river festival is held to worship the water goddess, Mizume-no-mikoto."
