Astronomer. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture. After graduating from Hiroshima Higher Normal School, he entered the Department of Physics at Kyoto Imperial University, Faculty of Science, and transferred to the Department of Astrophysics the following year, graduating in March 1923 (Taisho 12). In April of the same year, he became a lecturer at the same university, later an associate professor and then a professor, and was active in many fields during this time. He contributed to the development of Japanese astronomy, but resigned from his position as a professor at Kyoto University at the end of World War II and moved with his family to Kamiyakuno Village, Kyoto Prefecture (now Fukuchiyama City), where he lived a quiet life of farming and reading in the rain and in the sun. In 1965 (Showa 40), he founded Kyoto Sangyo University, became its chairman and president, and devoted himself to the education of his students, but died suddenly on July 10, 1978. He was a man of great learning, with many skills and talents, and wrote many papers, which were published posthumously as "Collected Papers of Araki Toshima."
