Marisol, E. (English spelling) MarisolE

...This generation critically tried to overcome the impasse that Abstract Expressionism had reached, which had become a cul-de-sac of personal subjectivity. They dismantled Surrealism and Cubism, which Abstract Expressionism had temporarily linked, back to their original forms, and then sought new directions to respond to the times. The former generation included R. Rauschenberg, J. Jones, C. Oldenburg, James Rosenquist (1933- ), R. Lichtenstein, A. Warhol, G. Segal, Tom Wesselmann (1931- ), and Marisol Escobar (1930- ), and they mainly extracted images of mass-produced goods and popular society and added their annotations. The latter group included Ellsworth Kelly (1923-), Jack Youngerman (1926-), Al Held (1928-), Helen Frankenthaler (1928-96), S. Francis, and Kenneth Noland (1924-), who performed clear, impersonal manipulations of color fields.
