Mount Takao - Takaosan

Japanese:
Mount Takao - Takaosan

This 599m-high mountain is located at the southwestern edge of Hachioji City, Tokyo, and at the southeastern edge of the Kanto Mountains. In 1950, it was designated as the Tokyo Metropolitan Takao Jinba Nature Park, and in 1967 as Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park. It is also the starting point of the Tokai Nature Trail. The entire mountain is covered with lush trees and has a wide variety of wild birds and other animals, making it feel like you are visiting a remote mountain valley, even though it is close to a big city. The man-made beauty of Yakuoin Yukiji Temple, the head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism Chisan school, at the top of the mountain, along with the observation deck, amusement park, and other facilities, attract many people for pilgrimages and sightseeing. In 1967, Keio Teito Electric Railway (now Keio Electric Railway) began direct service between Shinjuku and Takaosanguchi, making it an easy transportation option along with the cable car for mountain climbing, and a recreational spot near the big city. It has also become popular as a hiking trail to Kobotoke Pass, Mount Jinba, and Lake Sagami. Many souvenir shops line the foothills, creating a temple town landscape. There are no other examples of mountains and valleys blessed with natural beauty that are within easy day trip distance from the city center as special protected areas under the Natural Parks Act, even in foreign countries.
