It was established in Tokyo in 1882 by Yamada Akiyoshi, Iwashita Katahira and others with the goal of studying the national scriptures, clarifying the meaning of the national polity, and cultivating human resources with Japanese virtue. In 1890, they established Kokugakuin to study national history and national studies, and also trained Shinto priests. It was dissolved in 1946, and its work was taken over by Kokugakuin University. 国典を研究し,国体の意義を明らかにし,日本的徳性を有する人材を育成することを目的として,山田顕義,岩下方平らにより 1882年東京に設立された財団法人。 1890年には,国史,国学を研究するための國學院を設立し,神職の養成も行なった。 1946年解散し,その事業は國學院大學に受け継がれた。
