Shamsu'd-Din Iltūtmish (English spelling)

...Population: 691,000 (1991). A prosperous Hindu city since ancient times, it was conquered in 1232 by Sultan Shamsuddin Iltūtmish, who established his base of control over North India in Delhi, and became a Muslim-controlled area after that. In 1751, it was captured by the Marathas, and in 1771, it became the princely state of Gwalior under the Shindia family, but in 1804 it came under the control of the East India Company.
